Imagine a world where...
But that seems like such a huge stretch from where you are.
Maybe you feel like color is incredibly fickle.
The same colors that produced beautiful results last time produced mud this time. The exact same colors!!
Or you wove the same draft that you saw in a kit, or online, but you changed the colors just a teensy little bit - and now it looks awful.
You tried to figure it out on your own.
You read books about color in fiber arts, but they didn’t address the unique challenges that weavers face.
You watched videos about color in weaving, but they only scratched the surface, and they didn’t teach you anything about putting theory into practice.
You asked your friends and online groups, but they could only offer bits and pieces of advice, not a deep, solid understanding of how color works.
That's where I got stuck, too.
I'm Tien Chiu, and I used to be frustrated by color, too.
In fact, I got so frustrated as a color novice that I spent over a thousand hours studying color in weaving. I read every book on color I could get my hands on, dyed two thousand skeins of yarn, and wove over seven hundred color swatches.
And I’ve found a solution.
I discovered a systematic approach to color in weaving, an underlying set of rules that anyone can learn. These rules are based in neurobiology and culture - how the eye sees, how the brain processes what it sees.
If you understand and apply those rules, you - anyone - can design with color.
In my Color & Design course, I’ll teach you those simple rules of color in weaving, so you too can design gorgeous handwoven projects that everyone will admire. Color disasters will become a thing of the past!
What People Are Saying
The Color Courage course has offered me a new framework to approach textile design, using the concepts of intention for the piece, and of telling a visual story....I have absorbed new concepts to assist me with expressing the look and feel I want to achieve.
- Eileen Crawford (Color Courage for Weavers Workshop)
I have always had trouble choosing colors. I know what attracts me but they frequently don't have the effect I wanted. You have given me new insight. Thank you.
- Vicki Allen (Mini Course: Bold and Subtle Patterns)
If you’re thinking, “This can’t work. I’m hopeless with color,” or “I’m a color idiot...”
...please think again. Because I can honestly tell you, from deep personal experience:
There’s no such thing as a color idiot, just someone who doesn’t understand color - yet.
My early work was so terrible, I was embarrassed to show it.
Here’s one of my first attempts at a brilliant rainbow shawl:
What a muddy mess!
I felt like a color idiot. But I studied, I learned the underlying rules of color, and - just a short while later - my Kodachrome Jacket was featured on the cover of Handwoven!
So truly, I know your pain - and it can be fixed.
My Color & Design course can help you go from color idiot to color genius!

One set of online lessons will be released every week for six weeks, from Sunday, September 22 through October 27. You can access these lessons at your leisure, and you'll have access to them forever.
In the lessones, you'll learn the principles, then you'll practice what you've learned through fun interactive exercises so it really sinks in. You'll get to design your own projects, and chat with other students in our private Facebook group.
And, you'll get six live Q&A sessions! Every Saturday at 9am Pacific Time, from September 28 through November 2, I'll host a live Q&A session to answer your questions about color and design.

What People are Saying
“Before this class, I chose colors with gut instinct. Sometimes it worked out fine, but it never felt perfect. The Basic course was fine, already giving you some insights on color, but with the Workshop, you enter a whole new world.
After doing all the exercises, color isn't something foreign anymore but starts to feel natural. Now I can not only pick colors that work well together, but I also know how to set the right mood in a piece. Tien is a great teacher, taking her time to explain every question you can think of, guiding you through every lesson with kindness and patience.“
- Veronika (Color Courage for Weavers - Workshop)
"Tien Chiu is an amazing color guru and this course changed the way I see color, how colors interact, and that value is more important than hue. We learned how to create motion and tell a story. I got better at designing drafts and understanding tie-ups. I have enough ideas to last a lifetime."
- Debbie (Color Courage for Weavers - Workshop)
"The instructor is personable, understandable, and she explains things verbally and in written form. There is plenty of opportunity to try out the ideas she presents with some on-screen interactive tools. I liked this so much that I will be joining the full course on color and design. Can't wait!"
- Diane (Mini-Course: Bold and Subtle Patterns)
